Of broad circular form, the censer is raised on three curved supports and decorated throughout in underglaze cobalt blue with flowering plants including chrysanthemums and prunus, together with an extensive hand-painted calligraphic inscription.
The inscription appears to relate to chrysanthemum imagery and scholarly/literati themes, adding considerably to the decorative and cultural interest of the piece. The rim is finished with a continuous geometric key-fret border, while the three feet are individually decorated in blue.
The underside is largely unglazed, showing natural firing variation and age-related discolouration consistent with traditional manufacture.
A particularly appealing example of early 20th-century Chinese scholar’s or decorative porcelain, combining floral painting, calligraphy and a traditional tripod censer form.
