E.T. Gibbs \"Woodland Path\" signed Pastel | 1863-1934 | ANTIQUE | Art Nouveau: $17000.00
\"Woodland Path\" - Antique pastel signed by E.T. Gibbs (1863–1934).
- Edward T. Gibbs
- Likely era of creation is circa1890–1905 (in his late 20s or into his 30s).
- For the viewer who looks carefully, Gibbs added a hidden detail off in the distance between the 2 middle trees, a lone cabin in the woods.
- The sharp angles in the center of the clouds really draw in my eye. I\'m really impressed with his skill at using such a sharp edge in a pastel painting that is otherwise soft. It wouldn\'t be the same without it.
- His use of \"3rds\" is phenomenal! Gets you right in there ~ whole thing has a touch of Art Nouveau 🐠🎨
Who is Edward T. Gibbs? - Known for his soft, atmospheric landscape style.
- This Work is 1 of 8 pastels by E.T. Gibbs that I identified on-line (others listed below).
- He was listed as an “artist” in the New Bedford, Massachusetts city directory as early as 1882 (when he was about 19 years old).
- In 1891, he and William W. Braley advertised together specifically as pastel artists.
- It appears that pastel art was his main (and likely only) recorded livelihood, at least during the years he lived and worked in New Bedfordinto the early 20th century.
- Later in life he moved to Detroit, Michigan and then Ohio. No alternative occupation is documented for those periods either.
- The historical record is simply silent on Gibbs politics, just as it is on religion. He appears to have lived a relatively private life centered on his art.
- Married twice... toEleanor Wood in 1887 and then toNora Mixer in 1897.
other Works: - \"Figure on a Snowy Path at Dusk\"
- Framed Pastel Triptych of \"CenterSeascape with opposing Wilderness Scenes\"
- \"Indian Encampment by the Shore\"
- “USS ‘Chicago’ at Sail” circa ~1885
- \"Fog City Edge\"
- \"Birds Hunting\"
- \"Coastal Sea Scape\"
matboard & frame: - Comes with a green matboard and dark cherry wood toned frame.
- Bottom right corner of green matboard is blemished and the bottom half of the signature is hidden by the matboard (see pics)
- I have created a \"mockup\" of other possible matboard colors, so that buyers can see the possibilities of matching this pastel to their homes decor. Examples are in off white, dark grey, powder blue and black. My eye thinks the black is striking against the colorful green trees and blue white sky - the contrast elevates this antique work into the modern the back of the pastel it\'s written...17x24 1/2\" (when I measure it, it reads...17\"x25\")
- Outside of matboard measures 24\"x36\"
- Outside of frame: 28 5/8\" x 40 5/8\"
S&H: - For shipping I have replaced the glass with archival acid-free foam core = safe transport to buyer.
- There is no glass in the package, so buyer will have to purchase a 24\"x36\" piece of glass to put in place of the foam-core to protect the pastel from the elements.
a few tidbits: - I inherited this piece from my mothers side of the family.
- A few times while growing up I heard the story that my grandparents owned a higher end bar in the San Francisco Bay Area in the mid-20th century.
- They had a deep swimming pool in the bar\'s basement where they hired a women to swim around wearing a mermaid fin🧜♀️
- Her image projected up thru a series of mirrors onto the bars backdrop for all patrons to see 👀
- That was a magical story for me 💖
- As owner of this bar you can imagine my grandfather made sure his wife wore fur coats, diamond brooches and hung original Art Works (like this pastel) for the decor of their home.
