History of Eboya
Eboya (笑暮屋) is the fountain pen brand operated by Nikko Ebonite Manufacturing Co., Ltd., a Tokyo manufacturer specializing in ebonite. The company’s history is closely connected to the material itself, as ebonite was traditionally used for products such as electrical components and musical instrument mouthpieces before modern plastics became more widely used. Today, Nikko Ebonite is one of the few remaining Japanese manufacturers dedicated to producing ebonite.
As demand for traditional ebonite declined, Nikko Ebonite began developing its own finished products in the late 2000s. The company eventually turned its attention to fountain pens, using its experience in manufacturing ebonite to create writing instruments from the material it produced itself. In 2009, the company introduced its first fountain pens at an industrial exhibition in Tokyo. Five pens, priced at ¥60,000 each, were sold during the two-day exhibition, encouraging the company to begin full-scale production.
Eboya’s pens are made from original color-marbled ebonite, with the material being processed and finished by craftsmen in Tokyo. The company emphasizes that producing the pens requires careful attention to changes in the material, temperature, tools, and other conditions throughout the manufacturing process. Each piece of marbled ebonite develops its own pattern, so individual pens can have differences in their appearance.
The name Eboya is now closely associated with Nikko Ebonite’s effort to continue the tradition of Japanese ebonite manufacturing through fountain pens. The company also opened its own Eboya shop in Arakawa, Tokyo, in 2014, further establishing the brand as a direct expression of its ebonite manufacturing heritage.
Eboya Hakobane (Large) - Kogetsu Yellow
The Eboya Hakobune (Large) – Kogetsu Yellow is a handcrafted Japanese fountain pen made from Eboya’s original color-marbled ebonite. The Hakobune features a traditional barrel-shaped design with no clip, giving it a clean and understated profile. The name “Hakobune” (方舟) refers to a rectangular boat, which inspired the shape of the model.
The Kogetsu Yellow (江月) finish combines a deep black ebonite base with a distinctive yellow marble pattern. Eboya describes “Kogetsu” as referring to the image of the moon reflected on the surface of water. Because the marbled ebonite is produced and finished by hand, each pen has its own individual pattern and texture rather than having an identical printed finish.
As the Large version, the Hakobune measures approximately 150 mm capped, with an 18 mm cap diameter and 18 mm barrel diameter, giving it a substantial full-sized profile. The ebonite construction also provides the characteristic warm, slightly tactile feel of hard rubber, while the carefully polished surface gives the pen a smooth finish.
The Hakobune Large uses an international-standard cartridge/converter filling system and is fitted with a Bock #6 14K gold nib, available in Fine, Medium Fine, Medium, and Broad configurations. The combination of its substantial dimensions, clipless design, and black-and-yellow marbled ebonite gives the Kogetsu Yellow a distinctive appearance while retaining the straightforward, practical construction of the Hakobune model.
Bock 14K Gold Nib
The Eboya Hokabune (Large) is fitted with a Bock #6 14K gold nib in a Medium (M) configuration. Eboya lists the Large Houga with a Bock #6 14K gold nib and offers Fine, Medium Fine, Medium, and Broad point options.
The 14K gold construction provides the nib with good corrosion resistance and a degree of natural resilience. It is designed for controlled, consistent writing rather than being a flex-oriented nib, giving the writer a stable writing point with a responsive feel under normal writing pressure.
The Medium Fine point sits between a Fine and Medium width, making it a versatile choice for everyday writing. It provides more ink presence and smoothness than a very fine point while remaining sufficiently narrow for detailed handwriting, notes, and general correspondence.
The Bock #6 format is appropriately proportioned for the substantial 18 mm Large Houga, giving the pen a balanced appearance and a substantial writing point. Together, the 14K gold construction and MF configuration provide a practical combination of precision, smoothness, and controlled line width.

A TIER — Excellent Condition: This pen is in excellent condition with only minor flaws. There may be small chips on the nib, but no rust is present. Hairline scratches may be visible on the body, cap, and nib. The pen can be easily screwed on and off, and the filling system works properly.

2026 Update
⚠ Attention: High-Duty Regions (LATAM)
For buyers in the following regions, import fees in 2026 are significantly higher than the global average. These fees are determined by your government and are not included in the shipping price.
🇧🇷 BRAZIL: Combined taxes (II, PIS/COFINS, and ICMS) often reach 60–80% of the total value. A valid CPF (Tax ID) is strictly required for all shipments.
🇨🇱 CHILE: The duty-free threshold is only $30 USD. Orders above this are subject to 6% duty + 19% VAT on the total cost (including shipping).
🇦🇷 ARGENTINA: Strict \"door-to-door\" regulations apply. Buyers may need to confirm receipt on the AFIP website to clear customs.
Global Shipping Status
USA: Standard Shipping via Japan Post remains suspended. All US-bound orders ship via Express Courier (DDP) to comply with current US import regulations.
TURKEY: All orders ship via Japan Post EMS ($30 USD). Turkish customs require a Customs Broker; these fees are the buyer\'s responsibility and are non-refundable if the package is rejected.
RESTRICTED: We are currently unable to deliver to Russia, North Korea, Belarus, or Ukraine.

Due to current logistics challenges, shipping to the following countries is $75 USD via Express Shipping by default:
