Deceased actor Edward G. Robinson (December 12, 1893 – January 26, 1973) was a Romanian-born American actor best known for his tough, forceful screen presence and his influential portrayals of gangsters and other complex characters during Hollywood’s Golden Age.
Born Emanuel Goldenberg in Bucharest, Romania, Robinson immigrated with his family to New York City as a child. He developed an interest in acting while attending school and later studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He adopted the stage name Edward G. Robinson and established himself on Broadway before moving into motion pictures.
Robinson became a major star with his performance as ruthless gangster Caesar Enrico “Rico” Bandello in Little Caesar (1931). The film helped establish the gangster genre and made Robinson one of Hollywood’s most recognizable stars. Although frequently associated with crime films, he demonstrated considerable range throughout his career.
Among his notable films were Five Star Final (1931), Kid Galahad (1937), Double Indemnity (1944), The Woman in the Window (1944), Scarlet Street (1945), Key Largo (1948), The Ten Commandments (1956), and Soylent Green (1973). In Key Largo, he memorably returned to the gangster type as Johnny Rocco opposite Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.
During the 1950s, Robinson\'s career was affected by investigations into alleged Communist influence in Hollywood. He testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee and denied being a Communist, although some organizations he had supported were later identified as Communist fronts. His film career subsequently recovered, and he continued acting in prominent roles.
Robinson appeared in more than 100 films over a career spanning approximately five decades. His final movie was Soylent Green, released shortly after his death. He died of bladder cancer in Los Angeles on January 26, 1973, at the age of 79.
Robinson never won a competitive Academy Award, but the Academy honored him posthumously with an Honorary Oscar in 1973 for his distinguished contribution to motion pictures. He remains particularly remembered for helping define the screen image of the American gangster while also proving himself an accomplished dramatic character actor.
