Born near Vienna and admitted to its Academy of Fine Arts at just sixteen, he soon broke from academic tradition under the wing of Gustav Klimt, who recognized his precocious gift and became his mentor. Where Klimt offered golden ornament, Schiele stripped everything back to the nerve, drawing the human body with a jagged, unflinching line that laid bare vulnerability, desire, and mortality. His twisted figures, gaunt self-portraits, and haunting Bohemian landscapes provoked scandal in his lifetime, yet established him as one of the great draughtsmen in the history of Western art. Working with feverish speed in a career cut short at twenty-eight by the Spanish flu, he left behind hundreds of drawings and watercolours of extraordinary power. His work hangs today in the Leopold Museum and the Belvedere in Vienna, the Albertina, and major collections worldwide, and remains among the most admired and widely collected of any modern master.
