Original Signed Oil on Board | California Modernist Figurative Painting | Hollywood Artist
Description
An extraordinary and evocative original oil painting titled “The Wedding,” dated 1970, by California artist Elizabeth Johnstone Duquette (1917–1995), wife of internationally celebrated Hollywood designer Tony Duquette.
This intriguing Modernist figurative composition depicts a mysterious wedding gathering, rendered in an ethereal palette of muted turquoise, dusty rose, soft gray, pale green, and warm earth tones.
At the center of the composition, a young bride adorned with a delicate floral wreath holds a bouquet of white blossoms, possibly lilies of the valley. Surrounding her are solemn figures of varying ages, their expressions suggesting contemplation, memory, and the emotional significance of marriage.
Behind the figures, mountainous forms emerge through atmospheric layers of color, lending the composition a theatrical and dreamlike quality.
Rather than portraying a conventional wedding celebration, Duquette presents an intimate and psychologically expressive interpretation of the occasion.
The artist\'s fluid brushwork, carefully rendered faces, layered pigments, and unusual color harmonies create a painting that is both visually captivating and emotionally compelling.
The work demonstrates influences of Modernism, Symbolism, and Expressionism, combining representational portraiture with imaginative storytelling.
The painting is signed in the lower right corner, with the artist\'s signature verified through comparison with documented sale records of Elizabeth Duquette\'s artwork.
The original reverse backing bears a handwritten inscription identifying the artist, the year 1970, and the title “The Wedding.”
About the Artist — Elizabeth Johnstone Duquette (1917–1995)
Elizabeth Johnstone Duquette, affectionately known as “Beegle,” was an accomplished California painter whose artistic career intersected with the glamorous worlds of Hollywood, theater, and twentieth-century decorative arts.
Born in Los Angeles in 1917, she studied at the prestigious Chouinard Art Institute, an influential California art school associated with many important American artists and designers.
While attending Chouinard, she met the celebrated American designer Tony Duquette (1914–1999), internationally recognized for his extravagant theatrical interiors, costume and set designs, jewelry, and decorative arts.
The couple married in 1949 at Pickfair, the legendary Beverly Hills estate associated with silent-film star Mary Pickford.
Although Tony Duquette achieved international recognition for his theatrical designs, Elizabeth maintained her own artistic identity and established an independent career as a painter.
Her artistic accomplishments included:
· A one-woman exhibition at San Francisco\'s de Young Museum in 1957.
· Work in portraiture, murals, and imaginative figurative compositions.
· Paintings featured in Hollywood film productions, including the 1965 motion picture The Sandpiper, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
· Artistic activity within the influential Southern California creative community.
Her paintings are distinguished by expressive figures, imaginative compositions, sophisticated color relationships, and a distinctly theatrical sensibility.
Today, her work holds particular interest for collectors of California Modernism, Hollywood-associated art, twentieth-century figurative painting, and the artistic legacy of Tony and Elizabeth Duquette.
About “The Wedding” — 1970
Created in 1970, this painting presents a fascinating interpretation of a traditional wedding scene.
The composition incorporates several distinctive elements:
The Bride: A contemplative young woman wearing a wreath of flowers, her delicate features and solemn expression suggesting the emotional importance of the occasion.
The Wedding Party: A gathering of figures, including children and older individuals, whose softly modeled faces appear almost like memories emerging from the background.
The Floral Symbolism: White blossoms and floral garlands suggest purity, renewal, love, and the traditions associated with marriage.
The Landscape: Mountainous forms establish an imaginary setting, creating a sense of distance and timelessness.
The Color Palette: Soft turquoise, rose, gray, and pale green contribute to the painting\'s unusual dreamlike atmosphere.
The result is a compelling composition that seems to explore not only the celebration of marriage but also family relationships, memory, tradition, and the passage of time.
Considering the artist\'s own marriage to Tony Duquette and their shared creative life, the subject is especially intriguing. Although an autobiographical interpretation is possible, no direct connection between this particular painting and the Duquettes\' wedding has been established.
