The scene is a Byzantine mosaic depicting Emperor John II Komnenos (reigned 1118-1143). It was created between 1118 and 1134 and is located in the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey. The mosaic is part of the Komnenian style, which is characteristic of the Middle Byzantine art movement.
The mosaic portrays Emperor John II Komnenos in regal attire, including a crown and the loros, a symbol of imperial power. He is depicted with a darker complexion than his wife, Empress Irene. Some art historians believe the mosaic may commemorate a donation by the Emperor to the Hagia Sophia, with John holding a bag of money presented to the Virgin Mary. However, there is no historical evidence supporting this claim.
Another interpretation suggests the mosaic depicts the coronation ceremony of Alexios Komnenos, the son of John II, and is a reflection of John II\'s dynastic policy, opposing his sister, Anna Komnena, and brother Isaac Komnenos\' claims to the throne.
