For Snelling was an historic post on the Western frontier from 1825 to the Civil War, commanded by Colonel Seth Eastman and other famous officers. closed and sold off in 1856. At the time of this letter the post was maintained by the 10th US Infantry and included the last slaves serving officers of the 10th Infantry at the post -Dred Scott had earlier been a resident slave at Snelling.
