During and after the Civil War, the US government issued paper fractional currency to make up the shortage of coins. Back in the day, these sorts of currency were called \"shinplasters.\" This is a U.S. fractional bill in the denomination of 50 cents (which was a lot more money then, $12.14 today), in the fourth series, issued between 1869 and 1975. It features a portrait of Samuel Dexter, US Secretary of Treasury in 1801, so marked on the bill, and the signatures of John Allison, Register of the Treasury, and Francis Elias Spinner, Treasurer of the United States. The back has information on how it could benegotiated.
Although I do not know the grade or whether it has been certified, I believe it may have been graded andcertified. It\'s in the sort of plastic case used by collectors and sellers of antique currency, and there was something which has been marked out on a label on the case. I listed it as not, because I do not know.
I\'m not a collector or knowledgeable about antique American currency. This turned up (in the plastic case) as bookmark in something I was reading. I priced it by comparison to samples listed for sale online. It\'s unusually clean,crisp, and intact, and is priced accordingly. I will entertain reasonable offers, especially if accompanied by explanation, but in any event.
