Frankie, the mother, is a middle-aged woman struggling to balance work and family. Extremely realistic and down-to-earth: Unlike those American families living in big houses and glamorous lifestyles, the Heck family is always worrying about bills, their house is always messy, and the children are constantly getting into trouble. The problems they encounter—forgetting homework, grabbing discounted items at the supermarket, scraping together money to buy things for the kids—are all "small things" that ordinary families face, making them very relatable.
A warm and healing core: Although life is always "bittersweet" and full of troubles, the Heck family always stays together, bickering and laughing. There are no perfect parents or model children, but they always give each other an unspoken hug in crucial moments. It tells you: imperfection is what family is all about.
Charming characters: The five main characters are incredibly distinct, especially the three children. You might find Axl lazy, but you'll also see his growth; you'll find Sue's failures both funny and heartbreaking, and then be moved by her optimism that never gives up; Brick's little quirks are both strange and adorable.
