Fine Antique Japanese Imari Porcelain Plate, Meiji Period, Gilt Scalloped 19th C For Sale

A finely painted antique Japanese Imari porcelain plate from the Meiji period (circa 1868–1912), a step above typical export-grade Imari in both complexity and quality of painting. Offered from a private collection.

Details:

• Scalloped (lobed) rim with eight alternating reserve panels
• Four large panels featuring bold iron-red and gilt-brown scrolling foliage/feather motifs, with birds rendered in fine iron-red and gray detail
• Four smaller panels with orange chrysanthemum medallions and gilt scrollwork accents
• Cobalt-blue banded borders separating each panel, with gilt highlights throughout
• Central medallion in underglaze blue and white depicting a fenced garden scene with a flower basket, foliage, and stylized clouds
• Reverse bears a single hand-painted underglaze-blue character near the rim (the same \"good fortune\"-type auspicious mark seen on comparable Meiji Imari export ware) — a traditional decorative mark, not an identifiable factory or artist signature
• Richer, more detailed composition than typical Meiji Imari export plates, with noticeably finer brushwork and additional gilt work

Condition:
Please review all photos closely, including the detail shots. There is a very small (approximately 1–1.5mm) mark on the underside of the rim. It may be a tiny glaze chip or may be a minor in-body/kiln irregularity under the glaze from the original firing — I cannot determine which with certainty from photographs, and note this transparently rather than guess. Aside from this, there are no other chips, cracks, hairlines, or repairs anywhere on the plate. Colors and gilt are vivid and well preserved. Buyers who want a definitive read on this spot should request additional close-up photos before purchasing.
