Trained by Ian Wilkes as a homebred for Janis Whitham, Fort Larned won 10 of 25 starts and earned $4,471,322. Fort Larned took time to develop, winning his first stakes race at age four when he took the Challenger Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs, but he quickly developed into one of North America’s top handicap horses that season. He finished his 2012 campaign with wins in the Grade 3 Skip Away Stakes, G3 Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap, and G1 Whitney Invitational Handicap, and he punctuated the season with a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park.
He remained in lofty company at age five, winning the G1 Stephen Foster Handicap and the Homecoming Classic Stakes, both at Churchill Downs, before ending his career with a fourth-place finish in his effort to defend his Breeders’ Cup Classic title.
He is currently at stud in Wyoming. The 18-year-old son of E Dubai previously stood at Duncan Farms in Ohio, where he had resided since 2020. He began his stud career in 2014 with Adena Springs, standing at the operation’s Kentucky, Florida, and Ontario bases during his time on the roster.
Fort Larned has sired nine crops of racing age, with 103 winners and combined progeny earnings in excess of $7.7 million.
