✾ About the Artist — Frederick Carl Frieseke (1874–1939)

Frederick Carl Frieseke was born in Owosso, Michigan in 1874 and trained at the Art Institute of Chicago before moving to Paris in his twenties to study at the Académie Julian and, most consequentially, at James McNeill Whistler\'s atelier — an experience that shaped his sense of color tonalities and atmospheric effects throughout his career.

Around 1900, Frieseke settled at Giverny, France, where he became a central figure in the American expatriate community working in the village made famous by Claude Monet. The Friesekes\' garden at Giverny — which Frieseke painted obsessively over more than two decades — became the laboratory for his signature subject matter: color-drenched flower gardens and sun-dappled nudes posed outdoors in dappled light. Where Monet pursued atmospheric impression of landscape and water, Frieseke pursued figure and garden in saturated color, producing what one contemporary critic called \"the most American of the American Impressionists despite spending his career in France.\"

Frieseke achieved major international recognition in his lifetime: a gold medal at the Carnegie Institute International, Pittsburgh, in 1908; a Grand Prize at the Venice Biennale in 1909; election to the National Academy of Design; numerous solo exhibitions in New York, Paris, and across the United States. His paintings are held in major American museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and many regional museums. Frieseke remained in France through the First World War (during which his Giverny home was within distance of the front), and died in 1939 just before the Second World War, having spent his entire mature career outside the United States while remaining recognized as one of the foremost American Impressionists.
