While I eventually became familiar with the entire series, it was always the first film that stayed with me the most. Its isolated setting, believable characters, and slow-building suspense made it feel uniquely unsettling. Unlike later installments, the original film felt grounded in reality, which made the horror even more effective.Rather than focusing on the iconic hockey mask often associated with the franchise, I wanted to create a tribute to the original group of counselors. To me, they were the heart of the story. Their friendships, personalities, and innocence are what made the events at Camp Crystal Lake so memorable and tragic. This painting celebrates those characters while honoring the film that introduced audiences to the legend of Jason Voorhees.The composition began with a cast photograph from the film, but I expanded it into an entirely original artwork by incorporating additional storytelling elements, including Camp Crystal Lake, Mrs. Voorhees, archery references, and other subtle visual nods to the film. The dramatic blood-red drips above the counselors were added as a symbolic reminder of the terror lurking beneath the surface of an otherwise peaceful summer setting.I chose watercolor for this piece because I wanted to preserve a sense of transparency and atmosphere while allowing the drawing itself to remain visible. The medium helped me capture the reflective lake, lush summer foliage, and nostalgic mood that I associate with the original film. Much of the artwork\'s character comes from the detailed hand-drawn foundation beneath the paint, which took several weeks to complete before the watercolor process even began.The custom rustic wood frame was selected specifically to evoke the feeling of an old lakeside cabin, making it a natural extension of the Camp Crystal Lake setting.
