An original wood engraving titled Pietà byGerman-American artist Fritz Eichenberg (1901–1990). Printed in black ink onpaper, the composition depicts the Virgin Mary mourning over the body of JesusChrist. The work is titled “Pietà,” inscribed “AP 2/10” in pencil at the lowerleft, and pencil signed “Fritz Eichenberg” at the lower right. The artist’s“FE” monogram is incorporated into the block at the lower right. Thisimpression is from a small artist’s proof edition of ten.

Fritz Eichenberg was a German-born American illustrator,printmaker, author, and educator known especially for his expressive white-linewood engravings and literary and religious imagery. Born in Cologne, he studiedat the Municipal School of Applied Arts in Cologne and the Academy of GraphicArts in Leipzig before beginning his career as an illustrator in Berlin. Heemigrated to New York in 1933 and later worked for the WPA Federal Art Project.Eichenberg taught at the New School for Social Research, founded and directedthe Graphic Arts Department at Pratt Institute, and later headed the artdepartment at the University of Rhode Island. His deeply humanist and pacifistoutlook also informed the religious and social imagery for which he becamewidely known.

The wood engraving is in good condition with minorhandling marks consistent with age. It is unframed. Please refer to thepictures for condition.
