FLETCHER-BERRY, Riley M. Fruit Recipes: A Manual of the Food Values of Fruits and Nine Hundred Different Ways of Using Them. New York: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1907. First Edition.
Scarce original 1907 first edition of this substantial early American culinary work devoted entirely to fruit, containing approximately 900 different methods and recipes for its preparation and use. Illustrated from photographs, including striking images of both familiar and exotic varieties of fruit.
Fletcher-Berry covers an unusually broad range of subjects, including fresh and cooked fruits, preserves, jellies, marmalades, pickles, beverages, desserts, ices and sherbets, while also discussing the nutritional and culinary qualities of individual fruits. Particularly interesting are sections devoted to tropical and less commonly encountered varieties, making the volume as much a period reference to early-20th-century American fruit culture as a cookbook.
Original dark blue cloth with distinctive silver-stamped fruit motifs, pictorial device, lettering and borders to the front board and spine. Copyright 1907 with “Published, March, 1907” on the copyright page. Illustrated throughout from photographs.
Condition: Good+ overall. Binding remains intact, with moderate rubbing, scuffing and edge wear to the original cloth, particularly at the corners and spine extremities. Page edges toned with age. Rear inner hinge shows separation/weakness as pictured but remains attached. Interior generally clean and well preserved for its age, with occasional light toning and minor signs of use. An attractive and increasingly uncommon original copy of this 1907 first edition, substantially preferable to the numerous modern reproductions of the title.
