Historical Context:
The 4d Dull Green belongs to Great Britain\'s distinctive 1883–84 “Lilac and Green” issue, produced by De La Rue and designed for combined postal and revenue use.
Most values of the series, including the 4d, were introduced on 1 April 1884.
An important characteristic of this issue is the use of doubly fugitive ink, intended to react if attempts were made to remove postal or fiscal cancellations. As a result, surviving green stamps can show considerable variation in their present-day appearance depending on exposure, soaking and storage.
This makes groups such as this particularly interesting for comparative study.
Condition:
Three genuinely used Victorian examples with mixed postal and age-related condition.
The stamps display clearly contrasting present-day green tones, ranging from a darker olive/dull green appearance to substantially paler and brighter examples.
These differences are visually interesting but are not offered as certified catalog shade varieties. Because the original green ink was fugitive, changes caused by soaking, environmental exposure or storage may also influence the current appearance.
All three stamps carry substantial postal cancellations.
The A-D example has the darkest appearance and a very heavy cancellation covering much of the design.
The K-L example is considerably paler and shows a complex combination of circular and barred postal markings.
The R-I example retains the brightest green appearance of the trio and has a prominent circular cancellation together with additional barred markings.
There is general toning, postal wear, surface soiling and some irregular or shortened perforations.
The expected watermark is Imperial Crown, and watermark characteristics are visible on the reverse scans, but no individual watermark variety is guaranteed.
Please examine the enlarged front and reverse photographs carefully.
Offered AS-IS and exactly as shown.
