Cancellation/Postal Markings: All four stamps carry barred numeral cancellations appearing to be 498, Manchester, Lancashire.
Lot Notes: Four different Queen Victoria stamps from different periods, collected together for their common Manchester 498 numeral cancellation.

A particularly interesting specialist group for collectors of British numeral cancellations and Manchester postal history.

Included are:

• Queen Victoria perforated 1d Red, heavily cancelled with Manchester 498;
• 1856–57 6d Lilac, without corner letters, carrying a very prominent central 498 numeral;
• 1884 4d Dull Green, appearing to be SG192, again with a strong 498 Manchester cancellation;
• 2½d Blue Plate 23, appearing to be SG157, with Manchester numeral cancellation.

The repetition of the same 498 postal numeral across several different Queen Victoria issues makes this lot considerably more interesting as a cancellation study than as four unrelated used stamps.

During the Victorian period, British post offices used distinctive barred numeral obliterators to cancel postage stamps.

The number 498 was allocated to Manchester, one of the major postal and industrial centres of nineteenth-century Britain.

This group illustrates the continued use of the Manchester numeral across several Queen Victoria stamp designs and denominations, covering a substantial portion of the Victorian postal era.

These are genuinely used Victorian stamps with substantial postal and age-related wear.

The 1d Red has a very heavy cancellation, irregular perforations and general toning.

The 6d Lilac shows a particularly strong and easily readable 498 strike. There is age-related toning and some perforation wear. The precise lilac shade has not been certified.

The 4d Dull Green shows fading or washing of the original fugitive green color, together with a strong Manchester cancellation and general postal wear.

The 2½d Blue Plate 23 retains a clearly visible plate number but shows heavy cancellation, toning and some irregular perforations.

The reverse sides show varying degrees of toning, previous hinge or adhesive evidence and age-related paper disturbance.

Watermarks have not been independently confirmed.

The stamps have been identified on a best-effort basis from their visible designs, denominations, plate characteristics and comparison with philatelic references.

The 6d appears to belong to the 1855–57 SG68–SG70 family, but the exact lilac shade cannot be reliably determined from scans alone.

The 4d appears to be SG192 / Scott 103.

The blue 2½d clearly shows Plate 23 and appears consistent with SG157.

The 1d Red has not been assigned a specific plate or Stanley Gibbons number.

The numeral cancellations appear consistent with Manchester 498, but buyers are encouraged to independently verify all postal markings and catalog classifications.

No claim of rarity or premium cancellation grade is made.
