The Artwork:
The image depicted is "Music, Pink and Blue No. 1" (1918) by the legendary American modernist Georgia O'Keeffe. This piece belongs to a transformative period in her career when she was exploring oil painting to create visual equivalents of music and intangible emotions.
The Exhibition:
The poster was printed for the landmark exhibition The Spiritual in Art: Abstract Painting 1890–1985, which ran at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) from November 23, 1986, to March 8, 1987. Curated by Maurice Tuchman, this highly celebrated survey examined the mystical, occult, and spiritual origins of abstract art, and famously introduced or re-contextualized major artists like O'Keeffe and Hilma af Klint.
