This is the story of Jefferson Barracks, where during the first half of the 19th Century troops actually went out and fought Indians in Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa and Florida. They ventured outside the county to Mexico, but actual fighting took up only a small amount of a soldier\'s time. Jefferson Barracks served as an organizational base where units such as the Regiment of Dragoons, the Second Dragoons, the Regiment of Mounted Rifles and the First and Second Cavalry regiments got their start. During the second half of the century Jefferson Barracks served as a medical center, arsenal, engineer depot and recruit rendezvous. Probably no other military facility had such a varied role in American history. This volume attempts to not only provide a history of the people and events that took place at Jefferson Barracks, but in so doing show what Army life was like at a military post, at first situated on the frontier, then remaining alive and important as the frontier was left behind.
