With claims from the Greeks, Romans, Jews, Nabateans, Arabs, Crusaders, Ayyuoffers, Mamluks, and Ottomans, this 140-square-mile area on the Eastern Mediterranean coast showcases a complex past before coming under British control after World War I.
These eight remarkable ancient coins capture Gaza\'s journey from the 4th century BC to the mid-20th century:
1/ Seleucid Kingdom, bronze unit - Following Alexander the Great\'s conquest in 332 BC, Gaza was ruled by the Seleucid kings for nearly 300 years.
2/ Aretas IV, Nabatea, bronze unit - In the 1st century BC, the Nabateans made Gaza their port city, with King Aretas IV surrendering it to Jewish King John Hyrcanus.
3/ Herod I, Judaea, bronze prutah - In 30 BC, Caesar Augustus granted Gaza to Herod the Great, a significant figure in the New Testament.
4/ Arcadius, Roman Empire, bronze follis - For centuries, Rome held Gaza. Under Arcadius, paganism diminished around the early 5th century.
5/ Abbasid Caliphate, bronze fals - The Arabs conquered Gaza in 634, converting the Cathedral of John the Baptist into a Great Mosque. In 750, the Abbasids made Gaza a learning hub.
6/ Mamluk Dynasty, copper fals - In 1260, the Mongols destroyed Gaza City, but the Mamluks revitalized it in 1277.
7/ Mahmud II, Ottoman Empire, 20 para - By 1516, Gaza became part of the Ottoman Empire, which transformed the small town into a more vibrant city.
8/ Mandatory Palestine, 2 mils - After World War I, Great Britain took control of Gaza as part of the Mandate of Palestine, ending its rule in 1948.
