Created in 1918, Murder of Edith Cavell depicts British nurse Edith Cavell descending a prison staircase before her execution during the First World War. Bellows places the white-clad figure prominently against a dark architectural interior illuminated by scattered lanterns and lamps. The work belongs to his 1918 response to reports of German wartime atrocities in Belgium; the Library of Congress and Metropolitan Museum of Art identify the composition as a lithograph.
