Condition Report (Please Read Carefully):
This print is inrestored vintage condition. The sheet has a history of water exposure from a previous owner, which has since been structurally treated and stabilized. As seen clearly in the detailed photographs, residual water staining and light foxing/toningremain present primarily along the perimeter margins and prominently visible on the blank reverse side. The center image area remains structurally intact with bold, vibrant blue and black coloration. The sheet retains its highly textured, deckled-edge charm and could be beautifully highlighted with archival matting and framing, or benefit from further professional conservation. The included justification page also shows some vintage age-toning.About the Artist: Georges Braque (1882–1963)Georges Braque was a monumental French painter, collagist, and sculptor who fundamentally altered the course of Western art. Alongside Pablo Picasso, he was theco-founder of Cubism, making him one of the most influential figures of the 20th-century avant-garde.Key Art Historical Contributions
- The Invention of Cubism:Between 1908 and 1914, Braque and Picasso worked so closely in Paris that they often joked they were "married" or like mountain climbers roped together. They rejected traditional perspective, breaking objects down into fragmented, geometric shapes to view them from multiple angles simultaneously.
- Pioneering Collage (Papier Collé):In 1912, Braque became the very first artist to introduce imitation wood-grain wallpaper into a drawing, inventing thepapier collé(pasted paper) technique which revolutionized modern mixed-media art.
- The Lyrical Late Period (1950s):While his early work was rigid and analytical, Braque's post-WWII artwork shifted toward deeply poetic, symbolic, and fluid motifs. He became fascinated by Greek mythology, birds in flight, and abstract spaces—which directly inspired the1957Espaces(Spaces) portfolioyour prints are from.
"During the 1950s, Georges Braque personally collaborated with master stencil printer Daniel Jacomet to oversee the translation of his private gouaches and drawings into limited-edition graphic portfolios. This 1957 'Espaces' edition represents the pinnacle of Braque's late-career obsession with space, texture, and myth."Keep in mind the shipping price also covers handling fees, packaging materials & time, not just postage.
