5th Florida at the Rogers Farm
The smallest Brigade in Lee’s Army was composedof its only regiments from the State of Florida. The 2nd, 5thand 8th Florida were all veteran units with significant battle experience. The Brigadearrive at Gettysburg with 742 actives but was minus its commander GeneralEdward Perry. Colonel David Lang of the 8th Florida was now in command of the brigade.
The brigade arrived in Gettysburg on the July1st and camped on Herr’s Ridge. In the morning of the second theywere moved south on Seminary ridge and were stationed north of Wilcox/’sBrigade and south of McMillan Farm. They sat and waited most of the afternoonand though they could hear the sound of fighting to the south, they did notmove out until late afternoon. ColonelLang was given orders to attack to the east along with Wilcox’s Brigade. Movingacross the open fields east of Seminary Ridge they took heavy fire from Union batteriesnear the Emmitsburg Road. As they closed in on the Rogers Farm buildings, theyslid to the right with the 8th Florida passing to the north of theRogers barn. At the Emmitsburg Road they confronted parts of Carr’s Brigade specifically the 1stMassachusetts the 26th Pa. and the 1st Massachusetts. Wilcox’sbrigade had hit the Union line with vigor allowing the Florida Brigade to threaten Carr’sright flank. After a brief and bloody firefight at the Emmitsburg Road, Carr retreatedtoward Plum Run
Here we see the scene as the 5th Florida closesin on the Emmitsburg Road. The 26th Pa. and the 11th Mass. are takingfire in the Rogers Wheatfield from both the 5th Florida and Wilcox’s 9thAlabama in the Rogers farmyard. Behind the Union Line Seeley’s Battery, who hadcaused the Floridians much grief earlier heads for safety. In the leftbackground is the Trostle Farm and up theEmmitsburg Road are the Klingle Farm buildings. The Floridians would pursue the Uniontroops all the way to Plum run. There a hammer blow by the 1stMinnesota finally stopped the Confederate advance.
