Description
The rich sound produced by its large body is unique, and it played a prominent role in band sets until the advent of the electric guitar. The design, featuring a perfectly flowing body arch, is a signature Gibson style, and currently popular models such as the Les Paul and ES-335 inherit its spirit.
This particular instrument is from 1944, a time when the script logo was still in use. This alone evokes a sense of history.
This model, manufactured from 1932, initially had a 16-inch body width, but was soon upgraded to 17 inches from 1934 onwards. In an era before electric guitars became commonplace, larger bodies were required to produce a louder sound.
However, this wasn't easy; increasing the size involved significant technical and costly modifications. 17 inches is the second largest size after the top-of-the-line Super 400 (18 inches) and the same size as the top-of-the-line L-5.
The tuning pegs are quite old, open-gear Kluson tuners used in the 1930s-40s. The gear ratio is 1:12.
Compared to modern tuners, the gear ratio is lower and the movement is larger, but they turn surprisingly smoothly. The color is a beautiful original sunburst, a reddish-brown like almond.
There are some repairs, but considering its age, the condition is good. The nut has been replaced.
The nut position has been slightly widened towards the end. The frets have been replaced.
The pickguard has been replaced. There is a strap pin mark on the neck heel.
It has been filled and touched up. The binding has been repaired.
There is a tear that appears to have occurred during the repair. Accessories: Excelsior vintage hardshell case. *Non-original
