Gong featuring Bill Bruford – Live in Norway 1974

Gong, led by the maverick David Allen and his partner Gilli Smyth, stood out even within the eclectic Canterbury scene — let alone the wider progressive rock world — and built a devoted worldwide following through their relentless touring. After signing with the emerging French label BYG in 1971 and releasing their second album, "Camembert Electrique," the band's sound evolved dramatically, establishing their singular style. They then signed with Virgin Records, at the time an up-and-coming label specializing in progressive rock, and the success of the "Radio Gnome Invisible" trilogy propelled the band into the mainstream. At last, here is a live album capturing the tour that followed the release of "You."

Though the band was on an upward trajectory, they faced setbacks: drummer Pierre Moerlen departed, and his replacement Laurie Allen struggled with drug problems. As a result, the band brought in none other than Bill Bruford — the celebrated drummer of the recently disbanded King Crimson — as a touring support member. Of the shows featuring Bruford, the final concert of the tour, held in the Norwegian capital of Oslo on December 15, 1974, was recorded and broadcast as a special program by a local FM radio station. This release is a precious, complete archive of that performance, including medleys and a Steve Hillage solo number. While only 11 songs from this recording had previously circulated via the Norwegian radio station's tapes, the newly unearthed final four tracks now complete the picture of that historic concert for the first time — a release fans have long been waiting for.

Centered on material from "Angel's Egg (Radio Gnome Invisible Part 2)" and "You," this performance — elevated by Bruford's support — surpasses Gong's previous live work in technical sophistication. The set also features "Solar Musick Suite," the centerpiece track from Steve Hillage's debut solo album "Fish Rising," released around the same time. As bonus tracks, the release also includes a 1973 BBC Radio session performance from the era of Pierre Moerlen and Gilli Smyth.
