I\'m pleased to offer this Adamite (variety: Cuprian) specimen from the San Rafael mine, Gabbs, Nye County, Nevada. The specimen measures 2.45 x 1.81 x 1.27 inches or 6.23 x 4.60 x 3.24cm and is in excellent condition.
This was collected by Ron Gibbs (rongibbsite) of Oro Valley, Arizona and is among the very many donations Ron has made to the Pinal Geology and Mineral Museum in Coolidge, Arizona. I\'m the volunteer curator at the PGMM and have long been using excess specimens and books, etc. to raise funds for the museum--founded by my dear friend Dr. Raymond Grant (raygrantite). This piece shows very attractive light blue adamite (copper-bearing) crystals on goethite with a very dark contrasting iron or manganese (my guess) thin coating--this really sets off these brilliant crystals well. This really needs a loupe (10x) or microscope to best appreciate it but the crystals are clearly evident to the naked eye.
The San Rafael mine was worked largely for lead and silver and a bit of gold was produced as well. It saw its best and most productive days in the 1920s. It never was a very productive or profitable mine and is best known to collectors for its wealth of beautifully crystallized lead and arsenate minerals. Nearly 70 different species have been found within the underground workings and the mine has long been popular with micromounters. Keep an eye on my listings as I\'m likely going to list a fantastic San Rafaelcabinet-sizedmimetite!
