Offered here is a very attractive antique full-size violin that appears to date from approximately the late 19th to early 20th century, Markneukirchen work most likely.
The violin bears an old, heavily aged Antonius Stradivarius-style label inside. The label is so worn that it is difficult to see with the camera but I have provided some pictures of it.
The instrument has a particularly attractive one-piece figured maple back, lightly figured maple ribs and a nicely flamed neck. The varnish is a warm amber/reddish-brown with considerable character and natural-looking age and wear. The workmanship and materials appear noticeably better than those found on many inexpensive factory-made Stradivarius copies.
There also appears to be evidence of an old neck graft at the pegbox, although I have not had the graft professionally authenticated and therefore make no definite claim regarding it. The violin may be German, Bohemian, or otherwise Central European in origin.
Structurally, the violin is remarkably clean for an instrument of apparent age. I have found no top or back cracks, open seams, or major structural damage. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
I fitted the violin with a bridge and basic steel strings to evaluate it. Even when simply plucked, the instrument is very resonant with strong sustain and noticeable body vibration. The violin will come with a new set of dominant strings. Check back for a video that is coming in the next few weeks.
The violin includes its old case for protection and shipping. The new owner will likely want to buy a newer case for ultimate protection.
This is an intriguing old violin with beautiful wood, attractive oil varnish, a one-piece back, an unusually aged interior label, and possible evidence of an older neck graft. It is being sold as an antique violin of uncertain maker and origin, with no representation that the Stradivarius label identifies its actual maker.
Additional measurements, photographs, and playing observations may be added as I continue examining and setting up the instrument. Will make a great violin for an advancing player or professional!
