W. H. Hudson | Illustrated by Miguel Covarrubias
The Heritage Press, New York | Hardcover with Original Slipcase & Ephemera
An exceptionally attractive collector’s edition of W. H. Hudson’s celebrated tropical romance Green Mansions, beautifully illustrated by renowned Mexican artist Miguel Covarrubias and published in New York by The Heritage Press.
This distinctive edition combines Hudson’s atmospheric tale of wilderness, love, beauty, and loss with some of the most memorable book illustration of the mid-20th century. Covarrubias transforms the tropical forest into a lush visual world of dense foliage, exotic birds, sweeping landscapes, fire, wildlife, and brilliant vegetation.
The result is a volume that works equally well as literature, illustrated book art, and decorative collectible.
The Covarrubias Illustrations
A major attraction of this edition is the artwork of Miguel Covarrubias, one of the most distinctive illustrators, caricaturists, painters, and designers of his era.
This edition includes both full-color illustrations and black-and-white drawings integrated throughout the text. The tropical imagery features:
- Dense jungle vegetation
- Exotic birds and wildlife
- Mountain landscapes
- Forest villages
- Dramatic tropical scenery
- Full-page color compositions
- Decorative line drawings throughout the text
- Illustrated endpapers and exterior binding
The cover itself is wrapped in an extraordinary continuous jungle design, creating an especially attractive display piece when removed from the slipcase.
A Classic of Tropical Literature
First published in the early 20th century, Green Mansions follows the adventures of Abel, a traveler who enters the forests of Venezuela and encounters the mysterious Rima, a young woman intimately connected with the natural world around her.
Hudson combines romance, adventure, natural history, tragedy, and his fascination with the wilderness into a work that has remained his best-known novel.
This Heritage Press edition includes an introduction by Carl Van Doren, placing Hudson and his unusual romantic vision in literary context.
Original Heritage Press Presentation
This copy is especially appealing because it retains its original protective slipcase along with Heritage Club material associated with the edition.
Included with the book are:
- Original Heritage Press slipcase
- The Heritage Club Sandglass publication for Green Mansions
- Heritage Club envelope
- Additional Heritage Press printed material
- Original period sales/ownership ephemera shown in the photographs
The Sandglass is particularly desirable to Heritage Press collectors because it provides background on the author, illustrator, typography, book design, and production of the edition.

Condition
Vintage collectible condition with the book itself presenting substantially better than the outer slipcase.
The illustrated hardcover retains strong, vivid tropical colors, with light shelf and handling wear primarily along edges and corners. The spine remains attractive and readable. Interior pages appear clean and well preserved overall, with bright typography and strong color reproduction. A small handwritten/pencil notation is visible near the upper portion of the half-title area.
The original slipcase shows significantly more age and storage wear, including fading, discoloration, rubbing, soiling, edge and corner wear, fraying, compression, and small areas of separation or weakness at the openings and seams. It remains present and continues to house the book.
The accompanying Sandglass and other Heritage Club paper ephemera show normal age-related handling and toning.
Please review all photographs carefully for the exact condition of the book, slipcase, and accompanying material.
