Iggeret le-Nevuchim 1958 POLEMIC ON SHEMITTAH אגרת לנבוכים בשנת השבעLANGUAGE: HEBREWVG CONDITION, HARDCOVER On observance of Shemittah in the present by R. Isaac Jehiel ha-Kohen Gross. The title page notes that it was written in the diaspora and printed in Jerusalem in accordance with the will of our Father in Heaven. It describes R. Gross as being from the United States and notes that the date, 1958, is erev Shmeittah. The verso of the title page gives a Brooklyn address for R. Gross and dedicates the book to those who keep Shemittah. The text begins that he has seen that there are those who wish to go up (assume postions of responsibility) who are not fit, while others who are fit turn their faces away from disputing, giving a place to the ignorant and treat the honor of the Torah disrespectfully. He raises four primary questions: what is the halakhah concerning Shemittah in our time in Erez Israel; concerning Arab land; is there a halakhic leniency to sell land to Arabs; and lastly, if the sale of those who wish to do so is a valid sale. R. Gross also wrote Milhamot Mizvah (Jerusalem, 1959) on the subject of Shemittah.
Shemittah, according to the Bible, occurs during the last year of a seven year cycle. During that year all land has to be fallow and debts remitted (Ex. 23:10–11; Lev. 25:1–7, 18–22; Deut. 15:1–11). For centuries, shemittah remained a theoretical problem, discussed solely by talmudic scholars. However, with the dawn of modern Zionism and the subsequent settlement of Erez Israel, it became a practical problem for the settlers. Before the shemittah of 1889, the leading rabbis of the generation debated whether it was permissible to enact a formal sale of all the Jewish-owned fields and vineyards to non-Jews in order to permit the working of the land during the Sabbatical Year.
