Henry Watterson Hotel Louisville - 1912 - Stunning Pedestal Base - Hotel Silver Teapot – Coffee Pot!
Offered for your consideration is an extremely rare VERY LARGE 1912 side logo and bottom marked 8\" tall by 9\" wide (from the tip of the spout across to the opposite side 1 portion silver plate teapot – coffee pot made for the opening of the Henry Watterson Hotel that was located in Louisville, Kentucky.
This piece was most likely part of the original order of silver plate for the hotel\'s 1912 opening.If you collect vintage Kentucky Derby or historic Louisville items, you might want to consider this most rarest piece for your collection.
The teapot – coffee would have been used in the hotel’s dining room, coffee shop, restaurant, or even for room service to serve hot tea or hot coffee to guests in the most elegant fashion! Additionally, it would been used in connection with the Watteson hotel china and glassware for actual table service.This is the heavyweight type railroad silver, steamship silver, and restaurant silver plate.
It was made by the Rogers Brothers Silver Co. in Meriden, Connecticut. It is marked on the bottom:\"1847 Roger Bros Meriden Nickel Silver Silver Soldered - PATENT HANDLE, has the catalog number of 04100. is marked 1 pts (for one portion), and features the very nice looking phoenix bird backstamp that was used by Rogers. The side and top are also done in a beautiful \"Ribbon and Thread\" designed mount.
The teapot\'s lid does have some old damage to it that makes it tight to fit back on, but it works and raises up on the backside. The finial atop the lid also has a lean to it. On the side is the hotel\'s seal that looks amazing and reads \"HENRY WATTERSON HOTEL\" in a banner with two figures under that.
The exterior has the usual usagescratches, overall silver plate wear, pitting, and there are minor dings / indentations to the lower part of the sides from many years of actual hotel service. It has not been cleaned and is offered in the original patina as it was obtained. Overall, it looks beautiful the way it is. The handle is firmly attached, the lid functions well, and it sets well on an even surface.Overall, the piece has the most beautiful “Art-Deco” look to it.

Historically, the Henry Watterson Hotelofficially opened on April 29th, 1912, which was in time for the receiving all the guests coming into Louisville for the May 11th, 1912, Kentucky Derby.When opened, it was one of the city\'s most impressive hotels that rivaled other major hotels, such as, The Brown, The Seebach, The Kentucky Hotel, and others.
It was named after the famous Louisville resident who was a leading journalist of the 19th Century and part-owner and editor of the Louisville Courier Journal newspaper up until 1919. Watterson was also a Pulitzer Prize winner as well. He passed in 1921 at the age of 81.
The impressive 10-story, 250 room hotel was built downtown at 4th and Walnut Streets.When opened, it was considered one of the most modern and upscale hotels in the Midwest. The hotel was under the ownership of the Todes Hotel Co, which also included the Westgate Hotel in St. Louis, Missouri; the Plaza Hotel in Louisville; the Cumberland Hotel in Middleboro, Kentucky; the Homestead Apartment Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee;, the Helm Hotel in Bowling Green, Kentucky; the Montgromery Hotel at Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, and the Usona Hotel in St. Louis.
The Henry Watterson continued to operate for many years into the 20th Century. But as was the fate of many once grand hotels of the era, the allure started to fade and the country changed and it eventually closed in 1970\'s. In 1981, the grand hotel was demolished becoming part of Louisville\'s lost history.
During the era that this teapot was made and used, thehotel was a very popular place for people attending the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.Most patrons arrived by either the Chicago Indianapolis & Louisville, the Louisville & Nashville, Louisville Evansville & St. Louis (later to become the Southern), Baltimore & Ohio Southwestern, or the Louisville Henderson & St. Louis, Pennsylvania, New York Central (Big 4 – Cleveland, Cincinnati Chicago & St. Louis), or the Illinois Central Railroad.
