Historically important and spectacular scarf.“Smiles in Third Millenary\" is an iconic 90cm silk square (carré) released by Hermès in 2000 to celebrate the turn of the new millennium.The story of the scarf:Designed by Sefedine Ibrahim Alamin, known as Kwumi, a Sudanese artist born in 1983. He lost his parents at age 14 during the civil war in 1997 and found refuge in a Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) camp. While at a camp school for orphans, he created vibrant chalk drawings of African landscapes. Jean-Louis Dumas, then-chief executive of Hermès, visited the school and asked teachers to send him work from the most gifted students. Impressed by the contrast of peaceful imagery from someone who had witnessed wartime trauma, Dumas launched a collaboration. \"Smiles in the Third Millenary\" marked one of Sefedine\'s several designs for Hermès. Design: The 100% silk hand-rolled scarf features vibrant, joyful washes of color, depicting stylized smiling figures and symbols of peace. Cultural impact:The scarf gained renewed pop-culture fame after being worn in a pleated (plissé) version by Sarah Jessica Parker’s character Carrie Bradshaw in the Sex and the City episode \"All That Glitters.”
