Horatio Potter Signed Letter to Henry S. Randall, Secretary of State, Albany, Dec. 26, 1853
Autograph letter signed “Horatio Potter,” St. Peter’s, Albany, 26 December 1853, to the Hon. Henry S. Randall, Secretary of State of New York. Potter thanks Randall for the third and fourth volumes of the Documentary History of New York, having already received the first and second, and calls the work “very creditable to the State & to those who have been concerned in preparing & arranging the materials.” He adds that the volumes will be a memorial of their acquaintance during Randall’s “official sojourn in Albany.”
Horatio Potter (1802–1887) was then rector of St. Peter’s, Albany. He was elected Episcopal Bishop of New York in September 1854 and consecrated at Trinity Church on 22 November 1854. Henry S. Randall was Secretary of State, 1852–1853. The Documentary History is E. B. O’Callaghan’s four-volume state publication.
