Striking three-piece Italian earthenware set consisting of a large lidded “Biscotti” jar and matching “Olio” and “Aceto” oil-and-vinegar bottles.

Each piece is individually hand painted in a warm Tuscan palette of brick red, ochre yellow, cream and black. The elaborate Renaissance-inspired decoration includes Florentine fleur-de-lis motifs, scrolling foliage, striped handles and sculptural mask-form handles on the large jar.
The undersides are hand marked “Il Borgo,” “San Gimignano” and “fatto a mano,” Italian for “made by hand.” Il Borgo appears to have been a San Gimignano pottery workshop, retailer or product line; no individual artist attribution has been confirmed.

Handmade characteristics such as slight variations in painting, glaze, shape and finish are part of the pottery’s character and are not manufacturing defects.
