Several of the coverlets documented here were woven in the mid 1800s-- they are surviving pieces of everyday American Life from around the Civil War era. This is essentially a 1974 field guide to identifying textile art.
Fun fact: many mid 19th century Indiana weavers literally wove their names, towns, and dates into their coverlets. This book helps decode the designs of yester year- connecting surviving textiles with the craftspeople who made them more than a century ago.
