Joel Shapiro was among the preeminent American sculptors of our time. He started as a Post Minimalist of the 1970sand was initially known for his small intense shapes of homeand other structures such as ladders and bridges.
By the 1980s he moved to figurative sculptures of cantilevered bodies for which he is known for.
