Mah Rooyaan (Moon Faces)
Jalali Sousan-Abadi · signed Artist’s Proof AP 2/15

Rare signed Artist’s Proof by Iranian master miniaturist Abbas Jalali Sousan-Abadi (جلالی سوسن‌آبادی, 1934–2004). AP 2/15.

The sheet appears to title the work ماه‌رویان (Mah Rooyaan) — “moon-faced ones,” a classical Persian phrase for people of moon-like beauty. That reading fits the two idealized faces.

The image is after an original watercolor (not this print) painted in 1345 SH (1966–67). In 1352 SH (1973–74) the artist gave that original watercolor (not this print) to someone dear to him. Those dates belong to the original painting, not to this print. What is offered here is the later signed Artist’s Proof, AP 2/15.

Two stylized figures rest together; one holds a pink rose to the chest. Around them is the artist’s ornamental field of rabbits, swans, and birds.

This is a signed limited-edition fine-art print, not the original watercolor. Framed about 21 × 23-1/8\" in., dark wood with gold beaded liner, under glass, wired to hang. The print appears excellent as shown. Please examine all detailed photos carefully. What you see is what you get.

Please review every photo, especially the signature and Persian inscription. Packed for glass, or local pickup.Master Jalali Sousan-Abadi (Abbas Jalali Sousan-Abadi) — Signed Artist’s Proof 2/15
Framed limited-edition fine art print after the original watercolor
Overall framed size: 21 inches wide × 23-1/8 inches high
Iranian / Persian miniature tradition, dated 1345 SH,

A rare signed artist’s proof from a very small edition of only 15. Hand-signed in ink by the artist Jalali Sousan-Abadi (جلالی سوسن آبادی), marked A/P 2/15, with additional printed Persian inscription and the date of original watercolor (not this limited edition production) in 1345 SH, and gifted (not this limited edition production) in 1352 SH to a dear friend.

Two stylized lovers recline together, one holding a rose against the chest. The faces have the large, almond-shaped eyes and lyrical line of modern Persian miniature painting. Around the central image is an ornate mauve-pink border of rabbits, swans, long-necked birds, foliage, and swirling organic forms — the exact type of decorative framing Jalali used in his 1990s Iris-print series.

About the artist
Abbas Jalali Sousan-Abadi (استاد عباس جلالی سوسن‌آبادی, 1934–2004) was a master Iranian miniaturist and watercolorist. Born in the village of Susanabad near Arak, he studied from childhood with Master Forouzandeh and then spent twelve years under Master Altafi. From 1956 he worked in the miniature workshop of Iran’s Ministry of Culture and Art and later trained students in traditional arts. He moved to the United States around 1971 and lived and exhibited in Los Angeles. A 1996 exhibition at Gail Michael Gallery in Studio City was reviewed in the Los Angeles Times, which noted his fusion of Persian miniature precision with a modern, sensual flow, and his use of Iris prints — a high-quality fine-art printing process — including a series of figures framed by birds and creatures. He died in the United States on 23 June 2004.

His subjects were lovers, heroes, sages, and mythic scenes. Critics described his watercolor-on-paper technique as having “the translucency of enamel,” combining delicate ink drawing with luminous washes.
