Janet Leach St Ives Studio Pottery Lugged Vase Stoneware JL Mark Bernard Leach:
$650.00

A striking and tactile studio pottery vase by Janet Leach, an important figure in the British studio pottery movement and a key contributor to the legacy of the Leach Pottery at St Ives.

This hand-thrown stoneware vessel exemplifies Leach’s mature aesthetic, deeply influenced by traditional Japanese wood-firing techniques. The form is both restrained and expressive: a rounded, balanced body rising to a subtly flared rim, accented by small applied lug handles. The proportions and silhouette reflect a quiet confidence characteristic of her work.

The surface is richly animated with a natural ash glaze, producing a complex interplay of earthy browns, charcoal tones, and mineral deposits. Areas of pitting, glaze runs, and vitrified texture bear the unmistakable evidence of the kiln, making each surface shift a record of the firing process. These spontaneous effects are highly prized among collectors of studio ceramics.

The underside carries an impressed “JL” seal, consistent with Janet Leach’s work produced during her time associated with the Leach Pottery, St Ives.

Notes:

Janet Leach, wife of Bernard Leach, played a vital role in shaping the Anglo-Japanese studio pottery tradition. Her work is increasingly sought after for its individuality and strong connection to natural firing techniques. Pieces of this scale with pronounced ash effects and sculptural presence are especially desirable.

A compelling example of 20th-century studio ceramics—equally at home in a serious collection or as a standalone sculptural object.

The vase will be meticulously packed using professional-grade materials, including double boxing and ample cushioning, to ensure it arrives safely and intact
