The Story
For more than two and a half centuries, Japan was governed by the Tokugawa shogunate, beginning with Tokugawa Ieyasu\'s establishment of the bakufu in 1603 and ending with the Meiji Restoration in 1868.
It was an era of samurai, daimyō, castle towns and extraordinary economic transformation.
As peace replaced the warfare of the Sengoku period, cities such as Edo, Osaka and Kyoto expanded rapidly. Merchants became increasingly important, regional and national trade flourished, and Japan required a monetary system capable of supporting a sophisticated commercial economy.

The Ichibu Kin – Gold in the Palm of a Samurai
The Ichibu Kin (一分金) was denominated at one bu, traditionally representing one quarter of a ryō within the Tokugawa gold monetary system.
