Joanna Wason stoneware bottle vase made at the Leach Pottery, St Ives, Cornwall.
Striking tapering square/slab-built form with a short flared neck, finished in a deep glossy black tenmoku glaze with three expressive iron/kaki-colored diagonal brush or wipe decorations to the front.
The lower edge is impressed withJoanna Wason’s personal JW potter’s mark alongside the Leach Pottery / St Ives seal.
Wason worked at the Leach Pottery and later served as assistant to Janet Leach. Her work is particularly associated with stoneware, slab-built forms, and traditional Leach Pottery glazes including tenmoku and iron glazes.
A particularly attractive example of British studio pottery with strong sculptural presence.
