Exceptional signed Jorge Wilmot art pottery vessel from Tonalá, Jalisco, Mexico.
This substantial stoneware vase features three individually modeled fish applied in high relief around the shoulder of the vessel. Each fish is remarkably detailed, with sculpted fins, pronounced eyes, dark glaze and individually applied red decorative accents. Stylized aquatic plant forms rise around the body, creating a continuous underwater composition rather than a simple painted motif.
The vessel is finished in a cream-toned high-fired glaze with extensive fine craquelure/crackle throughout the surface. The crackled glaze is especially noteworthy in relation to Wilmot’s documented interest in traditional Chinese ceramics and his experimentation with high-temperature stoneware and Far Eastern-inspired glaze techniques after establishing himself in Tonalá.
The piece bears Wilmot’s characteristic hand-painted stylized “W” signature/monogram with horizontal stroke.
The combination of three-dimensional modeled animals, hand-painted decoration, high-temperature stoneware construction and pronounced crackled glaze makes this an unusually elaborate example of Wilmot’s work.
Jorge Wilmot (1928–2012) was one of the most important figures in modern Mexican ceramics. After studying art and ceramics in Mexico and Europe during the 1950s, Wilmot settled in Tonalá and became instrumental in developing high-temperature stoneware there while combining traditional Tonalá ceramic traditions with influences from Chinese and Japanese pottery.
Based on Wilmot’s documented artistic development and the technical and stylistic characteristics of this vessel, it may represent an earlier period of his Tonalá production; however, we have not established a precise date and are therefore not assigning one to the piece.
Condition shows surface and firing characteristics consistent with handmade studio pottery. Please examine all photographs carefully for the glaze surface, craquelure, firing variations, base, signature and overall condition, as the photographs form an important part of the description.
