Vibrant and energetic original mixed media painting by renowned Irish self-taught artist Karl Mullen (born 1954, Dublin, Ireland). Currently living and working in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
This striking work features a bold, primitive-style figure with a multi-pointed crown/hat, expressive split-color face (green and red), and a richly patterned robe with white dots, stripes, and geometric details. The figure stands against a deep charcoal/dark background on deckled-edge paper, with arms dramatically outstretched.

Mullen is a celebrated figure in the Outsider Art world, often compared to Jean Dubuffet’s Art Brut movement. His raw, spontaneous works draw from Irish mythology, dreams, family, and personal experience. He works with non-traditional materials (pigments, walnut oil, and more), frequently painting with his hands using kitchen tools and found items. His pieces have been exhibited at the New York Outsider Art Fair, Intuit Show (Chicago), Folk Fest Atlanta, and numerous galleries across the US and Europe. They are held in private collections and institutions such as the Polk Museum and Hurn Museum.
