“LIRICA” was a legendary Japanese manga magazine published by Sanrio from September 1976 through 1979.Created by Sanrio’s president at the time under the concept of “creating a magazine that would be remembered,” it brought together popular artists to produce a beautiful, full-color magazine dedicated entirely to manga. It featured contributions from manga artists who were at the forefront of both popularity and artistic skill at the time.In addition to manga, the magazine occasionally featured full-color spreads on topics such as Sanrio merchandise, fashion, interior design, and cooking.Since plans were in place to release an English edition, this manga magazine was launched as Japan’s first left-bound, horizontally written publication. However, Japanese readers, accustomed to right-bound books, found it difficult to read, and sales struggled.Although it featured a lineup of popular artists, the all-color monthly serialization proved too burdensome for the creators, leading to a shift from full story serialization to the publication of illustrations only. Furthermore, the transition from full color to two-color printing contributed to a decline in popularity, and the magazine was discontinued just three years after its launch.Nevertheless, it remains a legendary magazine that Sanrio took on with genuine determination.
