Large Chinese Ancestral Family Portrait — Six Figures, Qing Style

Offered here is a substantial Chinese ancestral family portrait, hand painted in ink and colors on paper, depicting six members of an extended family arranged in two registers. Overall framed dimensions are approximately 42 x 60 inches.

Two senior figures dominate the upper register, seated formally on either side of a central altar table bearing a group of inscribed memorial or spirit tablets. Four additional family members are seated below. The difference in scale is hierarchical rather than perspectival, emphasizing the senior generation in a manner characteristic of traditional Chinese ancestor portraiture.

The painting is particularly striking for its costume and ceremonial detail. The senior male is depicted in formal Qing-style official dress with court hat, broad collar and belt. The women wear brilliant red ceremonial robes, elaborate court-style headdresses with pendant ornaments, and rectangular bird-motif rank badges. The two younger men below wear dark robes and court caps. Chairs, footrests, textiles and costume details are carefully delineated throughout.

At the center are four inscribed ancestral tablets. The inscriptions appear to employ traditional memorial and honorific terminology and identify members of the represented family. The inscriptions have not been professionally translated or independently authenticated, and no representation is made as to the identity of the family.

Chinese ancestor portraits were created for family commemoration and ritual observance rather than simply as decorative portraits. Their frontal poses, formal expressions, symmetrical compositions and emphasis on family hierarchy are characteristic of the genre.

Date and attribution: The costume, composition and painting style appear consistent with the late Qing to early twentieth-century tradition of Chinese ancestor portraiture. The work has not been removed from its frame or examined by a specialist, and no definitive representation is made as to exact date, workshop or authorship. It is offered as an anonymous Chinese ancestor portrait based upon its appearance, materials and the photographs provided.

Provenance: Purchased by the present owner from an antiques dealer in Macau in the 1990s. Subsequently framed in Hong Kong in a substantial rosewood frame with plexiglass, and retained in the same private collection for approximately thirty years.

Condition: The painting displays age-related toning, scattered staining and foxing, creasing, surface wear and areas of old paper disturbance or repair, all visible in the photographs. The colors remain notably strong, particularly the reds, blues and greens, and the facial and costume details remain clear.

The painting is housed under plexiglass in the rosewood frame commissioned by the present owner in Hong Kong in the 1990s. The reverse is closed with paper backing, as photographed, and the painting has not been removed from the frame since acquisition. The frame itself shows normal age-related wear.

Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description. Additional detailed photographs are available on request.

Shipping: Because of the very large size, local pickup is strongly preferred.
