La Fanfarlo by Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867),illustrated by Leonor Fini and published by La Diane Française, Nice, in 1969.This large-format livre d’artiste contains 13 original color lithographs (10single pages + 3 with text) by Fini illustrating Baudelaire’s celebratednovella. 11 of the lithographs are pencil signed by Fini, and the limitationpage is additionally signed by the artist. This is copy No. 73, printed onGrand Vélin d’Arches, housed in the original grey cloth-covered publisher’sportfolio with red interior.

Leonor Fini (1907–1996) was an Argentine-born artistraised in Trieste who became one of the most distinctive figures associatedwith European Surrealism. Working in painting, drawing, printmaking, bookillustration, costume, and stage design, Fini developed a highly recognizablefigurative world centered on transformation, theatricality, femininity,fantasy, and psychological ambiguity. Illustrated books formed an importantpart of her graphic work, and La Fanfarlo is among her substantial late-1960s collaborationswith literary texts.

This current portfolio was previously in the collectionof Neil P. Zukerman, owner and director of CFM Gallery in New York, and a closefriend of Leonor Fini who co-authored the catalogue raisonné of her oilpaintings. This exact copy, No. 73, was cataloged in Zukerman’s 2005Illustrated Catalog of Leonor Fini Books Currently Available at CFM Gallery.

Very good condition overall. The original portfolio showslight age-related and handling wear. The loose sheets, deckled edges, andportfolio format are as issued. The lithographs remain well preserved overallwith minor age-related wear consistent with a 1969 artist’s book. Please referto the pictures for condition.
