The idea behind the publication of this book was to imbue the beautiful flowers with the image of his wife Henriette, who died in 1842. It is said that the paintings were made with the earnest hope that he would be able to see his late wife again after his death. Threads are frayed and corners are crushed. The top edge is slightly soiled. Some pages are cracked (no pages are completely detached), and there are many stains and extensive spotting on the pages. The illustrations themselves, which are protected by glassine paper, are not markedly soiled or stained, but the stains are noticeable in the margins.
