Cheyanne artist Archie Blackowl was born in Oklahoma in 1911 but was forcibly removed from his reservation at age seven and sent to an ‘assimilation’ school in Kansas. Despite his difficult childhood, he grew up to become one of the most respected Native artists in the United States.
This excellent serigraph (silkscreen) was created in 1981 during his lifetime in Santa Fe, New Mexico by Tewa, a fine arts printing company. It was silkscreened onto a fine, textured black drawing paper using vibrant pigments and remained inside its original wrapping until I removed it. The 13x15 inch mat has some bumps and dings from being in storage for 45 years, but the serigraph is in excellent condition.
