Up for sale is a piece of WFL/Ludwig drum history !
This is a WFL/Ludwig Sky Blue Pearl drum kit from the 1950s and 1960s
Sizes:
BD 14x22 with 3 ply mahogany interior with maple rings - 1950s
RT 9x13 with 3 ply mahogany interior with maple rings - 1950s
FT 14x14 with 3 ply mahogany interior with maple rings - late 1960s
SD 5x14 with 3 ply mahogany interior with maple rings - 1950s
FT 16x16 with 4 ply granitone maple interior - late 1960s/70s
This is a lovingly refurbished kit from the shells out, a salvage operation really considering the original condition of flaking paint (or what was left of it) on the outside of some of the drums. All hardware hand cleaned and polished, lugs repacked and tuning rods lubed. New Sky Blue Vintage wrap from Precision Drums in NY installed, waxed and buffed. The Ludwig BD tom mount from the 60s was installed with clip mount for the 9x13 tom (there was no original tom mount on BD). BD has original fold out spurs and mounts.
This is an awesome drum kit. The mahogany shells are so warm and rich, remarkable sounds for 70 years or so old. Bearing edges in good shape on kit. The chrome hardware back then was very heavy duty and cleaned up great after 70 years…
* The only odd kid in the family that sticks out is the 16 Floor Tom that has a maple 4 ply shell interior with grayish interior granitone coat, but it sounds good and matches up with the rest of the kit nicely sound wise.
The center lugs on the drums have a vintage vibe going on, may account (along with the mahogany) for a warm sustain on the sound quality. This model came out way before the Clubdate series I’m thinking, the center lugs much smaller on this kit.
Everything tunes up great. New or like new heads all around. BD has Remo Muffle Ring on batter head and a appropriate vintage small script Ludwig logo head on front.
This is the oldest kit I have ever owned, with about 4 to 5 months of labor to revive her and make presentable for the party.
One can only imagine the musical history behind this kit, must have been played at some swell gigs.
I would prefer to sell this to a drummer in the US, one who will keep it and play it👍🏻
Much Thanks and Adios my Sky Blue friend…
Regards, Gary Padgett
