A small, deep bowl left unglazed, its outer wall covered in a dense web of dark fissures where the clay contracted in the kiln, over a ground that shifts from pale ash-grey to burnt orange. The rim is uneven and softly rolled; inside, the clay turns a warm rust-brown, smooth and lightly pooled. It stands on three low feet, and the flat underside — pale and sandy — carries a single drainage hole and three red kiln-wad marks left where the pot rested in the firing. The Japanese seller states that the pot has scratches and small chips (キズ、ホツレ), and notes that as a used piece further small hairlines, chips or soiling may be present; please study the photographs.

AttributionThe name Machinao (町直) comes from the Japanese seller’s listing. We could not read a signature or seal on this pot in the photographs, so we present the name as given rather than as a verified attribution. Our reference notes record a Japanese potter of that name (Machinao Imaoka, 1925–2001), best known for glazed shinsha copper-red wares — a different finish from this unglazed vessel.

ProvenanceThis is a one-off piece (現品) — the pot pictured is the pot you receive. The underside shows a single drainage hole and three red kiln-wad marks from the firing.
