Maestro Boomerang BG-2 Wah Guitar Pedal Vintage 1970s Boomer 2 Tested and working
The Maestro Boomer (more commonly known as the Maestro Boomerang or BG-2) guitar pedal is a dual-function Wah-Wah and Volume expression pedal. Produced by Gibson\'s Maestro division in the late 1960s and 1970s, it combined tonal sweep and volume control into a single heavy-duty floor unit.
The pedal was engineered to add dramatic expression to rhythm and lead playing. It became highly famous for shaping the iconic \"wacka-wacka\" funk guitar tones found on the Shaft soundtrack and was heavily used by influential artists like J.J. Cale and John Martyn.
That El-Rad 500mh 7140 component is a legendary vintage wah-wah inductor. The label also reveals an exact manufacturing timestamp: the \"7140\" date code means this specific inductor was manufactured by the El-Rad corporation in the 40th week of 1971 (mid-October 1971). The \"Mod 602\" stamp inside this cast iron housing (see picture 10) reveals a interesting piece of vintage music manufacturing history: this pedal’s chassis was built using the physical body mold of a DeArmond Model 602 Volume Pedal. In the 1960s and 1970s, Gibson’s Maestro division did not pour its own metal enclosures. Instead, they contracted Rowe Industries / DeArmond (based out of Toledo, Ohio) to manufacture the heavy, streamlined cast-iron housings for their expression pedals.
Condition: Like most of these cast iron pedals from the sixties and seventies, the body shows signs of wear, but the pedal is functioning. It was tested with a 9v battery and aside from some scratchiness, both the volume and the wah-wah circuits work. While it maintains the original rubber feet on the bottom of the pedal, it is missing the bottom cover plate. And you\'ll note in the pictures, it still has the original round 9v battery clip designed for the Eveready 226 9v battery that were common back in the day. An inexpensive conversion kit can convert it to a modern 9V rectangular battery holder.
